She retired in 1994 after 34 years in the classroom, although she remained active in the local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, the professional honor society of women educators.

She enjoyed traveling with her family, painting landscapes, cooking, teaching Sunday School, and playing golf.

Survivors include her husband of forty-nine years, Boyce M. Lyon; a son, Gregory B. Lyon of Asheville, and two sisters, Sandra G. Cockerham of Wilkesboro and Linda L. Cockerham of San Diego, California.

A memorial service for Mrs. Lyon will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, May 12, 2011 at the Skyland United Methodist Church with the Reverend Keith Turman officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Burial will follow at Calvary Episcopal Churchyard in Fletcher.

STEVE DIXON

A resident of Asheville for most of his life except during his college years at UNC Chapel Hill, Dixon joined the staff of the newspaper in 1983.

During almost three decades shooting the events, residents and natural beauty of Western North Carolina, he was known for his photographic excellence as well as his genteel manner and his trademark beard and collection of hats.

“Besides being a good all-around guy, above all Steve was an artist — I could always instantly recognize ‘a Dixon photo,’ in the paper, and I think he really set the standard for the other guys,” said Citizen-Times staff writer and columnist John Boyle.

“He just had that knack that takes a photo from the realm of craftsmanship into artistry.”

Citizen-Times photo chief Bill Sanders said Dixon’s particular photo passion outside of newspaper work was black-and-white large-format landscape photography “shot on 4-by-5 film and hand printed in his traditional black-and-white darkroom in his garage at home.”

Dixon started a website of his landscape work — stevedixonphotos.com — and has a sales wall in the Woolworth Walk downtown. In addition to photography, Dixon’s passions were bicycling, camping, backpacking, autocross, traveling and his family.

He leaves behind his mother, Martha Dixon; his wife of almost 32 years, Suzanne Dixon both of Asheville; his son, Brion, daughter-in-law Robyn and baby grandson, Ethan, all of Hendersonville.
